About the Curator of HearseForSale.org
Hey, I’m Ben and here’s my hearse story. I can vividly recall the first time I laid eyes on a hearse. I was only 8 years old, riding to church with my family, when I noticed a unique vehicle driving alongside us. Curiosity got the best of me, and I turned to my dad and asked, “What kind of car is that?”. Little did I know, it was a hearse. I immediately exclaimed, “I want a hearse!”. My dad quickly responded, “Hearses are used to carry dead people to their graves! You can’t have a hearse!”. However, my fascination with hearses persisted as I grew older. I embarked on a journey to find a hearse for sale, dreaming of making my first car a hearse. The allure of owning a hearse and the endless possibilities it presented captivated me. I reached out to mortuaries, visited numerous locations, and scoured the web for hours on end until, finally, in 1998, I stumbled upon a hearse collector in Long Beach, California. This collector had a dozen hearses available for sale, and one stood out to me – a 1959 Cadillac Superior 3-Way Coach. Unsurprisingly, that hearse was not for sale. I ultimately purchased a 1978 Cadillac S&S Coach, which had a striking blue-gray exterior, a blue interior, and that distinctive “hearse” smell.
Before I even acquired my hearse, I encountered skepticism from friends who believed special licenses were necessary to drive a hearse. However, that is not the case, and it is important to note that it’s “hearse”, not “hurst” or “hearst” (common misspellings or mispronunciations!). Furthermore, there are no legal restrictions on anyone owning a hearse.
Unfortunately, just two days after becoming the proud owner of my beautiful hearse, it was rear-ended, causing extensive damage to the rear bumper and rendering the vehicle ‘totaled’. Although the damage resulted in a total loss of the hearse, the silver lining was that hearses do not have a Blue Book value. Being custom-built by funeral homes, their worth is not easily determined.
The settlement I received for the original hearse allowed me to purchase a white 1976 Cadillac Superior Combination Hearse Ambulance. This particular hearse had jump seats, a glass partition, removable panels, and a vintage gurney.
My 1976 Cadillac Superior Ambulance/Hearse Combo was one of the most fun vehicles I’ve ever owned. What made it even better was the ability to change its appearance. With the rare landau panels, I could easily switch between a traditional landau hearse and a sleek limo-style look, giving it a unique versatility that always turned heads.
I used this hearse for everything—music gigs, dates, and even road trips, including camping in Calico. It was my daily driver for a while, and it never failed to make an impression. I even had the honor of chauffeuring for a wedding and a high school Homecoming dance, adding to the countless memories I made with this incredible ride.
I cherished that Cadillac hearse, but unfortunately, due to financial constraints (gas prices exceeding $500 per month in 1999), I had to sell it. And I still miss that hearse…
