This 1937 Packard One-Twenty Hearse is a rare and historically significant vehicle, discovered as part of a barn find in Long Island, New York, in 2018. Built by the Silver-Knightstown Body Company of Knightstown, Indiana, this hearse is believed to be one of only a handful ever produced on Packard’s 158-inch wheelbase commercial chassis. It features unique characteristics, including dual side mounts with covers, a Motorola radio, clock, heater, and the original drivetrain. The hearse remains in largely original condition and is considered a prime candidate for restoration.

Silver-Knightstown, originally founded as Kingstown Body Company in 1900, specialized in building high-quality, state-of-the-art hearses and other professional vehicles. Known for constructing side-loading hearses on Cadillac and Lincoln chassis, they also built on customer-supplied chassis, making their vehicles truly one-of-a-kind. This particular hearse, built on a Packard chassis, is an excellent example of their craftsmanship. However, with the onset of World War II, the company struggled, and in 1943, Silver-Knightstown was forced to dissolve due to the loss of skilled workers.

This specific Packard hearse spent much of its working life at a Brooklyn, New York cemetery, before being sold to a private collector in the 1960s. It remained in storage for over 50 years alongside other rare automobiles, including a 1937 Rolls-Royce and a 1947 Delahaye. When it was uncovered, it was celebrated as one of the most significant barn finds in recent history, especially given the rarity of the vehicles found together. Despite its time in storage, the Packard hearse retains much of its original structure, with a solid body, intact panels, and interior components.

While the original engine is seized, the hearse retains most of its original features and is ready for restoration by a dedicated collector. The vehicle measures 240″ in length and features 44″ wide side access doors, making it an imposing and elegant example of funeral service vehicles from the era.
