This 1959 Cadillac Hearse/Ambulance Combo Superior Royale was last seen for sale for $21,500 in Red Oak, Texas.

This 1959 Cadillac Hearse/Ambulance Combo, a Royale limo-style combination built by Superior, is one of the rarest and most sought-after funeral cars in existence today. While it clearly needs restoration, this car remains remarkably solid, with the rockers, frame, and quarters in great shape. Floor pans will need replacement, but given the rarity of this vehicle, it’s a minor issue. The car is mostly complete, with the missing door trim found in the back. Its unique combination design allowed it to serve as both a hearse and an ambulance.

The car has an intriguing history, having spent its entire life in Texas. It’s believed to have been used by Sanders Funeral Home, the same funeral home that handled Buddy Holly’s funeral. While there’s no definitive proof this exact car was used for the service, given the funeral home’s limited car purchases, it’s a possibility. Photos from the funeral are scarce, and even the Buddy Holly Museum has been unable to confirm the car’s involvement. Nevertheless, this 1959 Cadillac hearse offers a fascinating connection to a rock icon, adding to its allure.

In terms of condition, the windshield has some cracks, but the rare corner windows and rear door glass are in excellent shape. A few side glass panels are cracked, but they are flat glass and easily replaceable. The Superior badges and curtain rods are mostly present, along with front and rear heat and the original driver’s side quarter panel air intake. Aftermarket AC parts, the radiator, and the fan are included inside the car. The engine is complete, though its internal condition is unknown, making this Cadillac hearse an exciting restoration project for any collector.
