Hearse archive – Not for sale
In the quiet corners of Kasilof, Alaska, a remarkable relic of automotive history lay hidden—a 1954 Cadillac hearse meticulously crafted by the Meteor Motor Car Co. While its last license plate bears the year 1971, this vehicle’s story is far from over.
A Resilient Survivor
This hearse, with the serial number 54-201, emerged from obscurity when it was discovered behind a trailer home in Kasilof, AK. Its revival can be credited to a dedicated property owner who acquired it at auction around 1977.
A Glimpse into the Past
Under the hood, the original 331 engine still resides, coupled with an original 4-speed automatic transmission. Despite the passage of time, this hearse has clocked a mere 86,000 miles. Its top speed cruises at around 65 mph, although the speedometer has taken its leave.
A Unique History
Intriguingly, this hearse had a unique purpose in recent years, serving as a mode of transportation for those reveling in Halloween festivities. Bar hopping became its calling during the spooky season, infusing a touch of the macabre into its history.
In Need of Some TLC
As with all classics, this hearse has its quirks. Door gaskets require attention, the passenger door lock occasionally plays tricks, and the windows are now crafted from plexiglass. The driver’s side heater fan has retired, and there’s a bit of theatricality with a smoking engine once it warms up. Paint on the drip rail has seen better days, and the side pipes, while homemade, lack mufflers. There’s always room for more adjustments, or perhaps, the allure of a powerful 454 engine paired with a turbo 400 transmission.
